Educational and Professional Background

Christine Parkes received her BA in English and her minor in psychology from Beloit College in 1973. She received her Masters Degree in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1982. She has taught college overseas and taught several graduate-level counseling courses at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her experience includes work at in-patient and outpatient settings for mental health and chemical dependency issues. She has had an extensive background in child abuse and neglect treatment as well as in counseling disadvantaged adults and adolescents. In Montana, while in private practice, she was the Assistant Director of a program that specialized in the evaluation and treatment of sex offenders, victims and their families.

Christine and her family relocated in Bellingham in 1988 and she began a private practice in Whatcom County at that time, initially with her late husband, Phillip Russell, PhD, and later with Associates in Mental Health. She has been active on many boards in both Montana and in Washington and was on of the early founders of Brigid Collins in Bellingham. For the last several years, she has been active on the Corporate Board of Boys and Girls Clubs of Whatcom County.

Treatment Philosophy

While Christine employs a variety of approaches in therapy based on the needs and wants of her clients, she prefers a collaborate active, problem-solving approach with clients, often challenging them to try new behaviors and thought patterns both in and out of therapy. She often employs cognitive behavioral tools and EMDR as needed.
