Educational and Professional Background:
Jupe is a State licensed mental health counselor located in Bellingham, Washington. He offers his services to individuals, couples and families. Jupe also facilitates a monthly support group for Adults with ADD & ADHD. Jupe received his Master’s degree in Psychology from Antioch University Seattle in 2007, and an undergraduate degree in Human Ecology from Fairhaven College at Western Washington University in 1998. Before going into private practice, Jupe was a staff family counselor at CCS Recovery Center in Bellingham, Washington for four years. Jupe has been in private practice for four years.
Jupe’s approach to counseling comes from what is called Systems theory. The systems you are a part of – your family of origin, your current family, your work environment, social circles, school, etc.- contribute greatly to your sense of self and your emotional/mental health. Jupe will encourage you to get curious about the patterns in your life in these different areas. They might be communication patterns with others, unhealthy habits, or even destructive thinking and feeling patterns. There are patterns of behavior that are healthy too. Sometimes, these patterns have been in place since we were children or teens. Do they help or hinder you in being the person you would like to be now?
Jupe’s approach to counseling is also strength-based. In other words, he builds on what works already. Finding or remembering your strengths can be a journey. It is some of the most rewarding work you can do, and can change your life.
Finally, Jupe incorporates the idea of mindfulness into his work. Mindfulness is about bringing attention to what is happening in the moment and noticing, but not acting on how you feel in that moment. It’s about responding to your life rather than reacting to your life and the people in it. Feelings help us to take action and point the way out of problems. However, our lives don’t need to be defined by our emotions.
Area of special interest:
Jupe believes in each of us, there is a part that can be described as “shiny”. It is the part of us that makes our heart feel good and our head feel proud. Sometimes we lose sight of that part of ourselves and we can feel lost, lonely or confused. Helping you find that shiny part and expand it into all areas of your life is what Jupe does best. Each of us has what it takes to create a fulfilling life, AND….sometimes we just need a little help in that process.
